The Development of Scope and the Present Condition on the Course of Study


Abstract
The tendeney of popularization of colleges in Korea which has been neccessitated by national and social needs and our traditional love of learning have made the problems of higher education our greater concern more and more than ever these days. However it has been regreted that there has been set up none of precedent research on development of subject of majoring field which should occupy the centre of function in college and is prerequisite to learning in college. it is dealt in this study how the scope of subjects of majoring courses in 4 years system of college have grown to be increased, or how it has tended to increase to be specified iato subdivision or, how each department of majoring courses are distributed according to different region. Results of this study are summarized in the following:
A. Development of scope by courses of study;
a) Nurnl,er of courses of specialized study has increased from 61 in 1946 to 3,0 91 1983 shah, mg increase rate of 507%.
b) Itemized subject of study increased from 47 to 352 in the same period shot la inure se rate of 749%, which means increased number of subjects and present the phenomenon of subdivision of specialized studyies.
B. Distribution of courses of study by part of major field;
a) In 1983, the highest percentage of distribution of 22. 9% of whole istaken by part of the social science and 14.2% by Engineering for second and 13.9% by Teachers for third, 0.5% by Fishery and Marine for the lowest,
b) It is noted that the percentage of distribution of Engineering part has reduced since the highest in 1979 remarkably while that of Language and Literature part has increased much.
Analization of the above statistcal research leads us to the conditions that higher education in our country has made marked development in external shape as well as in substance and large part of efforts has been given to Engineering, Social Science and Teacthers courses. It must be pointed out that, firstly, scholastic concern has been concentrated on rather Iimitted courses of study and accordingly harmonious development of many courses are kept to be Kamp ered owing to unballanced growth among courses and, secondly, subdivision of courses of study have been strikingly stimulated, and thirdly each individual college has become to be equalized to lose its characteristics of scholastic accomplishments.
